Overview
In collaboration with IDEO and other partners, Triveous developed the DigitalConfidence.design framework—a scalable, inclusive design system created to serve the next billion internet users, many of whom are first-time digital participants in emerging markets like India.
As part of this transformative project, Triveous applied its expertise in user-centered design, inclusive technology, and scalable implementation to address the needs of novice users encountering digital interfaces for the very first time. The result was a globally adaptable framework that democratizes digital access through intentional, empathetic design.
The Challenge

India and many other emerging economies are witnessing unprecedented digital growth. However, this growth is often accompanied by challenges of accessibility, usability, and trust for millions of new internet users. Key problems identified include:
- Lack of Intuitive UI Patterns: Existing digital services were often built for experienced users, making them hard to navigate for new users.
- Low Trust in Digital Systems: First-time users, particularly from underserved regions, lacked confidence in digital transactions and platforms.
- Diverse Literacy Levels: Digital literacy varied widely, requiring content and interface design that worked for people across the spectrum.
- Inconsistent Design Standards: No unified guidelines existed for designing inclusive, intuitive interfaces for novice users.
Our Approach
Triveous approached this challenge by combining deep ethnographic research with scalable design thinking. Our process was grounded in field realities and co-created with organizations delivering services at scale.
1. User Research & Ethnographic Studies
- Conducted interviews and usability testing with first-time internet users across urban and rural contexts
- Identified behavioral cues, pain points, and trust triggers during digital interactions
- Mapped cultural nuances and patterns of mental models for interface navigation
2. Framework Development
- Created reusable design principles tailored for trust, simplicity, and accessibility
- Developed UI templates, do’s and don’ts, language tone guidelines, and accessibility patterns
- Focused on mobile-first design given high mobile internet penetration among the target user base
3. Validation & Testing
- Collaborated with large-scale digital platforms (Flipkart, Airtel, Unilever) for pilot deployments
- Iteratively tested the framework across sectors like finance, healthcare, and government portals
- Adapted and refined principles based on feedback from real-world product teams and users
Key Framework Principles

The DigitalConfidence framework is structured around four pillars:
- Trust-Centered Design
- Reduce ambiguity with clear, reassuring feedback
- Provide context-sensitive help and handholding features
- Prioritize safety over speed
- Consistency Across Platforms
- Use familiar patterns for navigation and actions
- Reduce cognitive load through consistent UI language and icons
- Inclusive Language & Tone
- Favor visual cues and minimal text wherever possible
- Use empathetic, non-technical, and culturally aligned communication
- Accessible for All
- Design with disabilities, low literacy, and low-end devices in mind
- Ensure contrast, tap targets, and font legibility meet accessibility standards
Impact

- Adoption at Scale: Used by thousands of digital teams and design systems
- Validated by Industry: Piloted by major Indian enterprises like Flipkart, Airtel, and Unilever
- Improved Inclusion: Contributed significantly to increasing comfort and adoption among new digital users
- Global Relevance: Recognized as a model framework for inclusive design in emerging markets
Triveous Contribution
- Led user research efforts with a focus on new digital adopters
- Co-developed core principles, playbooks, and reusable UI kits
- Championed scalability by designing tools and assets for easy team adoption
- Provided feedback loops from product implementation teams in real-time environments
Conclusion
The DigitalConfidence project with IDEO set a new benchmark for how inclusive design can drive digital adoption in low-literacy and low-resource environments. By shaping a framework grounded in empathy and usability, Triveous helped craft a toolkit that enables millions to confidently step into the digital world.
